How a 4-Day Workweek Shifted My Perspective on Family, Career, and Self

Since September, I have shifted to a four-day workweek, a change that has been good for my family life and personal growth, and, yes, even the laundry that tends to take over the house. The change came at the perfect moment: I was looking for a candidate to be able to pass off some of my work responsibilities and found one. And suddenly, I had more time to breathe and rethink my priorities.

At first glance, the shift felt like the perfect solution. It gave me the flexibility to support our family in ways that were becoming increasingly necessary. My husband’s business was scaling up, requiring more attention and energy from him, while the youngest of our family was navigating the big transition to first grade. This setup allowed me to be more present during these milestones without feeling like I was stretched too thin.

Family Wins

With the extra day at home, I could create a smoother environment for our kid’s entry into the structured world of school. It’s been great to be more present without rushing off to a meeting or worrying about the next deadline. I’ve also had the energy to handle day-to-day tasks like homework, pickups, and even cooking dinner—without the usual “end-of-day scramble” feeling.

It’s also made me a more supportive partner. As my husband’s business grows, he’s been busier than ever. With my schedule lightened, I’ve been able to take care of more at home, allowing him to focus on his work. It’s not always glamorous, but I feel like I’m helping anchor the family during this busy time.

Time to Rest and Reflect

Another benefit has been the gift of time to pause. With one less workday, I’ve also had some space to simply rest and reflect—something I hadn’t realized was missing in the hustle of my previous routine. I’ve slowed down, focused on what matters, and even rediscovered hobbies and interests I’d put on the back burner.

But as wonderful as these benefits have been, the shift has also stirred up some unexpected emotions.

Wrestling With Roles

As much as I’ve enjoyed being home more, I’ve realized something important: I’d be a terrible stay-at-home mom. I’m in awe of anyone who manages it full-time, but it’s just not for me. While I love supporting my family and taking the time to be present, I’ve realized I need the sense of purpose and challenge that comes with a career. It’s not that being at home isn’t important—it absolutely is—but I miss the intellectual stimulation and problem-solving that come with a job.

This internal struggle has been eye-opening. It’s reminded me how much I value having a role that challenges and fulfills me in a different way. It’s also helped me see that finding balance doesn’t mean settling for one role over another—it’s about creating a life where all the parts of me can thrive.

Looking Ahead – What’s next?

I’m grateful for this season and all it has taught me about what I need to feel fulfilled. If and when I would do this again, I would continue to take Mondays off! It’s been an opportunity to realign with my values, to support my family during an important time, and to figure out what might be next for me in 2025 and onwards.

Life’s journey isn’t linear, and that’s okay, even for someone who is not always patient. So, until the end of December, I’m embracing the chance to rest, reflect, and recalibrate.

If you’re considering trying out the 4-day workweek or making a shift in your schedule, I encourage you to take the leap if the opportunity presents itself. It’s not just about having an extra day “off”—it’s about what that day represents: the chance to realign your priorities, create space for personal growth, and approach your life with renewed intention. After that, you can join Valtteri Bottas and me and be more ready for What’s Next?

BTW.I f you’re a bit of a Valtteri Bottas fan like I am, here’s a little holiday cheer: He designed a Christmas card this year, and for every pack of 10 sold, $5 goes to a charity that supports families in need. A great way to spread some holiday spirit while supporting a good cause! Check it out here!
